The president of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, Berry Vrbanovic, gives a Rick Mercer-style rant about the state of Canada’s cities and communities.
The video is part of a new campaign to secure federal funding for municipal infrastructure before the current almost $2 billion a year program ends in 2014. Their report, “The State of Canada’s Cities and Community” [PDF], looks at the critical fiscal imbalance Canada’s municipalities and higher-level governments.
It’s a charming video that makes the discussion about our nationwide infrastructure deficit accessible to more Canadians. Nonetheless, I am disappointed by Vrbanovic’s cliched and one-dimensional depiction of “all Canadians”. Politicians need to move past hockey references and militarism in their depictions of what Canadians care about.
